Commitment

This is a word that represents an important manifestation of spirit in any life form. Angels have commitment to serve Me in special ways. Other spirit forms are committed to growth and to service in a great variety of ways. Humans have more choice, and, consequently, there are some who truly have no commitments. Life is just life. However it goes.

You, o son, have many commitments, some of which compete with one another. Having commitments you cannot keep encourages feelings of guilt and sorrow. Some commitments can be made for a time and then reduced or given up completely. New commitments can be made, at any time in life. So we’re talking about a combination of commitments which are characteristic of a developing life… some deep and lifelong and other temporary, even situational.

Some commitments are unidimensional, but most could be described under two or more dimensions of being… or health. When you made a commitment to have a summer garden this certainly had a physical dimension… to produce good food and to get some bodily exercise. A spiritual part of the commitment has been to seek the feeling and growth of spirit in this process, and this has been only minimally successful. Emotionally you haven’t committed yourself seriously to more than you’re willing to do, and that is wise, from My perspective. Without some commitment you would have accomplished little. You must commit yourself to keeping the berry bushes from encroaching any further.

But more importantly the commitment to your professional life has had a melding with your spiritual life, and, thus far, you’re “pulling this off” quite well. You are committed to Me and to these times of teaching/learning, even when you are away for sometime. You know that I am committed to this relationship, and so you want to be as faithful, considering your other commitments. These Teachings offer you valuable insights on either the content with which you’re dealing or with processes you’re developing and carrying out. Through this summer course just completed you have found a way to bring this spiritual experience of yours and some Teachings into the class directly. This is both good and risky. Continue to be aware of both.

You consider that I have given you this title today in order to suggest a study that would be the basis for your sabbatical study next year. I shall say that this has merit, from the standpoint of your profession and from that of knowing some of your colleagues in new and expanded ways. The question: what are your commitments in life? can be extended to: in what ways are commitments a part of your health? And the question: to what are you committed spiritually? is an important one to explore.
